Our History

The Capital Auto Group story began with the entrepreneurial spirit of two men: Hubert Parks and Chester “Junie” Michael. The pair played a key role in the inception of the Parks-Michael Automotive Group and eventually the founding of Capital Auto Group. The story starts with the journey of a pioneer company that opened its doors in 1915, the year that Babe Ruth hit his first home run, the first stone was laid on the Lincoln Memorial, and the one-millionth Model T was produced. Over a hundred years ago, with the founding of Sanders Motor Company in Smithfield, the region welcomed its first Ford dealership!

The Roaring 20s were a time of energy and excitement, a decade that brought new hope and vitality after the horrors of World War I. During this time, Mr. Sanders recognized an opportunity to grow his enterprise and moved it to the bustling state capital. As the business thrived and became a pillar of the community, it found a permanent home in a second Raleigh location, where it would become a city landmark at the iconic corner of Blount and Davie Street. More than half a century later, the dealership continues to thrive, bringing excitement and innovation to the heart of Raleigh.

June Michael’s son, Tim, was picked to run the first Capital location on April 1, 1985. From the moment he set foot on the premises, Tim conveyed a vigor, enthusiasm, and commitment that have never wavered; his passion for the business, with customer service at its core, is heralded by customers and competitors alike. The store was an immediate success in the Triangle, as the Parks-Michael connection continued to grow. Today, the Capital Auto Group family includes over 26 stores across the state of North Carolina, hundreds of employees, and numerous partnerships.
